bad day baby
O Genie, this art loving supplicant humbly requests a small bit of your vast knowledge..

Recently I bought this at an antique show, though it itself is not an antique, I am assuming it is a replica of a relief from somewhere.  The seller knew nothing about this piece, not even its name (her family refers to it as sexyman), and I'd really like to call it by its (his) real name and learn something about it.

Can you tell me anything about this piece (the original), where it is from, the name, the artist...anything.

sexyman

Thank you.

Prompted by a few suggestions, I tried doing some (...more, 'cuz I already did some searches) google image searches and with the title "high relief man's torso" I found this...  http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Vl06896ICQM/RzLGCLnQKeI/AAAAAAAAEGs/MpFrcG5d1qw/P1050705.JPG

I have no idea, but you might try searching on http://www.tineye.com/ , which allows you to search for similar looking images.

I tried, no luck. But what a great website! I never heard of it before.
Thanks for introducing it to me, I will keep trying it, as they update more images regularly.

I love that site. My husband uses it more often, and he says that a different color would throw it off, so it may not work for your piece. It finds matches to the image qualities, rather than shapes, I believe?

Still, it's incredibly useful. My main problem is that I can never remember what it is called!

If your local library has art resources, I'd ask them. Or if you have any friends in an art department...

Judging by the look of the piece, I'm more inclined to think the original was either carved from marble or stone. Maybe I should try to photoshop the pic I have, to give it a marble or stone finish. I will try that site again with a b & w version for now, until I figure out how to use photoshop ;p

I'm thinking of trying to find art/art history communities to ask, but I suck at doing searches...my life is so hard ;p

I was looking up some "ask an art historian" sites but not getting anywhere I decided to try my luck at google image search and I found it \o/ It isn't EXACT but it's close enough for me.

Ask.metafilter.com might be a good place to ask, though memberships there cost $5 and you may have to wait a week after joining to be able to post a question. It has a lot of members and the quality of the answers is high. (Not that there aren't good answers here! Just that AskMe gets more traffic.)
